Prempro is a leading hormone replacement therapy drug that combines estrogen and progestin into one small pill. It is prescribed by doctors for the treatment of menopausal and postmenopausal symptoms. A study done by the NIH-National Institute of Health has shown that long term use of Prempro may increase ones risk of breast cancer, strokes, heart attacks, and blood clots. The results from this study were so severe that the 16,600 women study was halted three years early for fear that participants were at risk for their health.

In response to the controversy with Prempro, Wyeth Pharmaceuticals, the makers of the drug, has issued new guidelines. Women are now cautioned against the long term use of Prempro. Unfortunately, many women began using the drug before such warnings were given and have, as a result of their use of Prempro, experienced adverse side-effects.
